Why now is a good time to start

Everyone waits for the perfect time to start. But few people ever seem to get to that point. Why wait? Why delay? What are you really waiting for? Here are some reasons why you might be ready for coaching right now.

Are you ready for coaching?

Here is a quick self-assessment checklist to see if you are ready for coaching services. If you answer ‘Yes’ to 3 or more of the questions listed on this list, you may be ready for a coach.

Why don’t we achieve our goals?

So many of us have dreams, aspirations, and goals that we never get around to. We spend all of our lives making plans but never accomplishing them. Here are some of the most common reasons we see people failing to live up to their potential.

How to find the right coach for you?

With so many coaches out there, how do you know you have found the right one for your needs? There are several things to think about. The first step is to know what your goals are. What do you want to achieve? Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? A coach can help you refine your goals, but you need to know what kind of coach to work with. Are you looking for a career coach? A life coach? A spiritual coach? An executive coach? Know what you need so you can find the right match.

The next step is to set aside some time to really search. Don’t go with the first site that shows up on Google.

Finally, take advantage of a coach’s free consultation to get to know him or her. Find out if there is some chemistry and rapport. You want a coach that you can communicate with freely.

Happiness is not enough

I am a student of happiness. I have read books about how to find happiness, how to become happy, and how to share happiness. They are all great books and I learned a lot from them, but I always had a tinge of discomfort when reading them. I mean, sometimes I like being moody. Sometimes I like feeling down and letting life happen. When someone close to me died last year, I let myself feel the experience. I let it flow through me. It was real. It was life. It was important. I think we try too hard to be happy all the time in this society. But life is more than that. Life is about feeling the whole range of emotions that comes with being human. Anyway, I found a great article about balancing happiness in Newsweek. Here’s the quote that stood out the most for me:

“On a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is extremely happy, 8s were more successful than 9s and 10s, getting more education and earning more. That probably reflects the fact that people who are somewhat discontent, but not so depressed as to be paralyzed, are more motivated to improve both their own lot (thus driving themselves to acquire more education and seek ever-more-challenging jobs) and the lot of their community (causing them to participate more in civic and political life). In contrast, people at the top of the jolliness charts feel no such urgency. “If you’re totally satisfied with your life and with how things are going in the world,” says Diener, “you don’t feel very motivated to work for change. Be wary when people tell you you should be happier.””

When I coach people I don’t pretend that life isn’t happening. I work with people to appreciate that life is messy sometimes and that we are doing the best we can. I also try to harness the power that can come from being uncomfortable in your current state. If you were not uncomfortable with the status quo, you would not be trying to change. I try to tap into that emotional dissonance and help the client use that for their advantage. Anyway, check out the article for yourself. It is a good one.
